Russia, France eye additional gas pipelines to Europe

09:10, February 21, 2012

MOSCOW, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Russia and France are considering the development of new pipelines to deliver gas to Europe, Gazprom said Monday.

Gazprom, the Russian gas giant, said in a statement that CEO Alexei Miller and Jean de Gliniasty, the French ambassador to Moscow, have discussed future cooperation between the company and the French energy sector.

"They agreed it is necessary to build new direct pipelines to transport natural gas from Russia to Europe to meet the growing demands of European consumers," Gazprom said.

The two parties also discussed other issues of common concern, including the Nord Stream project, the Shtokman project and cooperation between Gazprom and French energy company GDF Suez.

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin earlier instructed Gazprom to ensure natural gas exports to Europe during the recent cold snap.

Russian gas supplies to Europe in recent years have suffered from bitter disputes between Moscow and Ukraine. As a result, Russia has begun to build new pipelines, including the Nord Stream, which runs to Germany via the Baltic Sea, and the South Stream, which travels underneath the Black Sea to Bulgaria.
