EU sows discord among Zimbabweans by partial lifting of sanctions: FM

FMHARARE, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The Zimbabwean government on Monday said the EU's recent partial lifting of sanctions on the southern African country was a mischievous ploy aimed at sowing seeds of suspicion of selling out and divisions among Zimbabweans.

Foreign Affairs Minister Simbarashe Mumbengegwi told state radio that Zimbabwe has always insisted on the unconditional removal of the sanctions in their entirety as there was no justification or reason for their imposition in the first place.

The EU has announced the delisting of the 51 Zimbabwean individuals and 20 companies from the European Union sanctions list.

Mumbengegwi said Zimbabweans will not be deceived by the partial lifting of the sanctions which he described as meaningless and cheap propaganda aimed at perpetrating continuous harm to the national economy.

The minister said the partial removal is meaningless if Zimbabwe's key companies especially those involved in the mining and exporting of diamonds continue to be stifled by the unlawful embargo.

Mumbengegwi said while Zimbabwe has always stood ready to dialogue with Europe, it would have been proper for Europe to hear Zimbabwe's side of the story first before extending the illegal embargo.
