09:50, February 18, 2012

SAO PAULO, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva finished his cancer treatment Friday and left the Syrian-Lebanese Hospital in Sao Paulo, hospital sources said.

Lula, who was in office from January 2003 to December 2011, would continue his recovery at home, and undergo medical examinations every four or six weeks, his medical team at the hospital said in a statement. He is not allowed to join the traditional samba parade in Sao Paulo carnival, which starts Saturday, it added.

The former leader made no comments to the press as he left the hospital in the afternoon.

Lula, a former smoker, had been undergoing radiotherapy sessions at the hospital for treating his larynx cancer. He was diagnosed with a 3- centimeter tumor last October and received chemotherapy immediately.
