Iranian president arrives in Pakistan for trilateral summit

08:35, February 17, 2012

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived here Thursday on a two-day visit to attend a trilateral summit with his Pakistani and Afghan counterparts, local media reported.

The Iranian president was warmly welcomed on his arrival at a military airbase near Islamabad by Pakistani officials.

The Iranian president led a high-level delegation including ministers and senior officials.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai also arrived for the trilateral summit scheduled for Thursday evening.

A joint communique will be issued at the conclusion of the summit on Friday.

The three-way format that will primarily focus on exploring cooperation in the fields of economics and trade, counter- narcotics and counter-terrorism would provide an opportunity for the leaders to discuss such issues as fighting terrorism and organized crimes, officials said.

The leaders will also explore ways to improve border management and control of narcotics smuggling and seek reconciliation with Afghan Taliban.

The three sides have been holding trilateral summit since 2009, but so far they have made little headway in substantively bolstering cooperation because of their mutual suspicion.

The summit was last held in Tehran in mid-2011.
