09:01, February 14, 2012

MUMBAI, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Police in the Indian financial capital Mumbai have been put on alert after a bomb blast in a car of the Israeli embassy in New Delhi injured four Monday, including a woman diplomat.

"Security has been beefed up across the city, particularly in and around the institutions belonging to Israelis here," Mumbai police spokesman and Deputy Commissioner Nisar Tamboli told the media.

Special reaction troopers of Mumbai Police have been deployed at the Consulate General of Israel as well as sensitive spots where Israelis live and worship, he said.

Mumbai attack co-accused David Coleman Headley had conducted a reconnaissance of the Chabad House or Nariman House, a Jewish outreach center that was targeted during the Nov. 26 terror attack in 2008, and identified Chabad houses in Delhi, Pushkar and Pune as potential targets.

Headley also reportedly had surveyed the area of Race Course Road near Indian Prime Minister's Office in Delhi where the car blast occurred on Monday. Headley, formerly a Pakistan national, is now in U.S. police custody.

The 2008 Mumbai attackers specifically targeted Jews.
