ASHGABAT, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov was re-elected Turkmenistan's president by garnering 97.14 percent of the votes in Sunday's poll, the country's Central Election Commission said Monday.

The second place candidate is Energy and Industry Minister Yarmukhammet Orazgulyev who got some 1.2 percent of the votes, according to the preliminary results, with almost 97 percent of the votes counted.

The national voter turnout reached 96.7 percent, according to election officials.

Nearly 3 million voters cast their ballots at some 2,300 polling stations in the election featuring incumbent President Berdymukhamedov and seven other candidates.

Berdymukhamedov had been widely expected to secure a new five-year term in the race, which is monitored by 63 observers from the Commonwealth of Independent States as well as about 2,300 domestic inspectors.

According to Turkmen election law, the election is valid if the turnout exceeds 50 percent.
