UN condemns twin blasts in Syria, chaos spread to new front

17:00, February 13, 2012

DAMASCUS, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- The twin deadly blasts rocking Syria's city of Aleppo Friday drew condemnation from the United Nations, which reiterated that "all violence is unacceptable and must cease immediately from all sides."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon "firmly condemns" the bomb attacks in Aleppo, Syria's most populous city and commercial hub, which struck security and army compounds and killed scores of people, Ban's spokesman said in a statement.

According to the country's state media, the two consecutive attacks, caused by car bombings, left at least 28 people dead and 235 others injured.

"The secretary-general reiterates his strong conviction that the crisis in Syria can only be solved through a comprehensive peaceful political solution that addresses the democratic aspirations of the Syrian people and ensures the full respect of their human rights and fundamental freedoms," the statement said.

The northern city of Aleppo remained largely peaceful until the bombings. It has witnessed few of the anti-government protests that have gripped other regions of the country since they broke out 11 months ago in a bid to oust President Bashar al-Assad.

The first blast occurred at around 9:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) when a suicide bomber driving a van with fake plates burst the headquarters of the Military Security Directorate in New Aleppo neighborhood

These opposition are now armed thugs and they should be branded as such. Their actions have to stop too and the media and govt should not always point fingers at the state. Both sides have to stop the violence and come to the negotiation table to listen and compromise. Otherwise, their country will fall into an abyss.
