ISLAMABAD, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed, 17 injured and over 100 buried under the rubbles of a factory building that collapsed following a boiler explosion in eastern Pakistani city of Lahore on Monday, local media reported.

The explosion took place in the morning when over 100 people including 60 women and more than 40 kids were working in the three- storey pharmaceutical factory building.

The residents said that the factory was constructed some 30 years ago and most of its employees were women and children.

The rescue workers told media that they could hear the people trapped under the rubble yelling for help.

Running a factory in a densely populated residential area is against the law of the country and the residents said that the factory had been previously closed for five times on court orders but it was reopened due to the political influence of its owner.

The rescue operation is hindered by the narrow lane around the fallen building and the removal of debris could take more than 12 hours.

The adjacent building has been declared dangerous and the residents have been evacuated.

Chief Minister of Punjab province Shahbaz Sharif has directed the rescue workers to carry out the operation carefully.
