Death of 15 terrorists in S. Philippines, gov't response to calls for justice: official

08:45, February 07, 2012

MANILA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The death of 15 suspected terrorists, including the three top officials of the al-Qaeda-link Abu Sayyaf Group and Jemaah Islamiyah, was the Philippine government's response to the call for justice, a senior government official said on Monday.

Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin congratulated the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on the successful operation against the terrorists on Thursday in Sulu province.

"The deaths of Abu Sayyaf leader Gumbali Jumdail; Malaysian national Zulkipli Abdul Hir; and Singaporean national Mumamda Ali, both belonging to the Jemayah Islamiyah; effectively decapitates these regional terror groups from pursuing their reign of terror," he said.

"This operation is our response to calls for justice against these groups who mercilessly killed civilians and members of your Armed Forces.

Our troops demonstrated the effectiveness of a cunning and intelligent operation to weed out these terror elements,"Gazmin added.

"These types of operations achieved the goals of seeking justice without the risks of higher casualties in a protracted and expanded area of operation," he said.

Gazmin reminded the general public to remain vigilant and aware of suspicious elements who would seek revenge for the deaths of these terror leaders.
