7.1-magnitude quake hits Vanuatu -- USGS

HONG KONG, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- The magnitude of the strong earthquake which jolted Vanuatu at 13:34:40 GMT on Thursday was raised to 7.1 from 6.9 on the Richter scale, the U.S. Geological Survey said Friday.

The epicenter, with a depth of 23.10 kilometers, was located 124 kilometers west of Port Vila, the capital of the southwestern Pacific island nation.

Two aftershocks measuring 5.3 and 5.5 on the Richter scale ensued afterwards.

There have been no reported casualties or damages from the tremors.
