UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Saturday strongly condemned the deadly multiple attacks in northern Nigeria and called for "swift and transparent" probes.

A statement issued by Ban's spokesman said the secretary-general "condemns in the strongest terms" the series of attacks in Kano state, which left at least 156 people killed and more than 50 others injured.

"The secretary-general is appalled at the frequency and intensity of recent attacks in Nigeria, which demonstrate a wanton and unacceptable disregard for human life," the statement said.

Ban also extended his sincere condolences to the people of Nigeria and to the bereaved families, the statement said.

"In voicing solidarity with the government and people of Nigeria, the secretary-general also expresses his hope for swift and transparent investigations into these incidents that lead to bringing the perpetrators to justice," it said.

Earlier Saturday, African Union Commission Chairman Jean Ping also condemned the attacks "in the strongest terms", and expressed his condolences to the families of those killed and his concern for those injured.

Nigeria imposed a 24-hour curfew Saturday in Kano after the attacks, which targeted several police stations, barracks and the building housing a senior police inspector.
