WASHINGTON, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- A senior U.S. diplomat in charge of arms control will attend a disarmament conference in Geneva, Switzerland next week, State Department announced in a statement on Friday.

The statement said Rose Gottemoeller, Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance, will travel to Geneva through next Tuesday, for the opening week of the Conference on Disarmament's 2012 session.

In her speech at the conference, Gottemoeller is expected to press for immediate commencement of negotiations on a Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty and engage in consultations, said the statement.

On next Wednesday, she will travel to Vienna, Austria, to meet with treaty partners and discuss arms control-related issues of mutual interest, including the future of conventional arms control in Europe, according to the statement.

The Fissile Material Cutoff Treaty (FMCT) is a proposed international treaty to prohibit the further production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other explosive devices. The treaty has not been negotiated and its terms remain to be defined. According to a proposal by the United States, fissile material includes high-enriched uranium and plutonium.
