STRASBOURG, France, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The European Parliament on Wednesday elected 14 new vice-presidents during its plenary session in Strasbourg, one day after German socialist Martin Schulz was elected as its new president for a two-and-a-half-year term.

The top three newly-elected vice-presidents all come from the new president's centre-left Progressive Alliance of Socialist and Democrats (S&D) group, namely Gianni Pittella and Miguel Angel Martinez Martinez from Spain, and Anni Podimata from Greece.

Other new vice presidents include Alejo Vidal-Quadras from Spain, Georgios Papastamkos from Greece, Roberta Angelilli from Italy, Othmar Karas from Austria, Edward McMillan-Scott from Britain, Isabelle Durant from Belgium, Alexander Alvaro and Rainer Wieland from Germany, Oldrich Vlasak from Czech Republic, Jacek Protasiewicz from Poland and Laszlo Surjan from Hungary.

Vice-presidents usually lay down rules, draw up the Parliament's preliminary draft budget, and take care of administrative, staff and organizational issues.

In the Parliament's five-year legislative term for all members, positions such as the president and vice presidents are renewed every two and a half years while all MEPs are elected for a five-year term.
