DHAKA, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Bangladeshi cabinet on Monday approved a proposal that restricts capital market investment by the country's public servants.

The approval came at the regular meeting of the cabinet with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair, Press Secretary Abul Kalam told reporters.

A cabinet division official who preferred to be unnamed said the decision had been taken as part of the government's measures to stabilize Bangladesh's highly volatile capital market which had witnessed unprecedented falls in stock prices since last year.

The main market barometer, the Dhaka Stock General Index (DGEN), Monday shed 167.69 points or 3.33 percent to close at 4864.30 points from Sunday's finish.
