U.S. senator visits Myanmar

09:06, January 16, 2012

YANGON, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- U.S. senator Mitch McConnell arrived in Myanmar on Sunday for a four-day visit, according to official sources.

McConnell's visit followed that to Myanmar by U.S. special envoy Derek Mitchell earlier this week and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in December last year.

McConnell, who is top Republican in the U.S. Senate, will meet President U Thein Sein, speaker of House of Representatives U Shwe Mann in the capital Nay Pyi Taw, and Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the opposition National League for Democracy (NLD), other political figures and representatives of ethnic minorities in Yangon.

Their discussions will cover political reform, bilateral relations and regional security, diplomatic sources said.

McConnell's visit came after the U.S. announced to exchange ambassadors with Myanmar in recognition of the country's major political developments including the release of hundreds of prisoners of conscience and ceasefire agreement reached between the government and the country's largest ethnic minority rebel group.
