Resolution adopted to further UN-AU ties

10:07, January 13, 2012

UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Thursday unanimously adopted a resolution to further enhance ties between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations, particularly with the African Union (AU).

Adopted by the 15-member Council at the end of a debate on the UN-AU partnership, the resolution highlighted the "importance of establishing a more effective relationship between the Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council."

The debate was chaired by South African President Jacob Zuma, whose country holds the rotating presidency for the month of January.

The resolution called for the "improvement of regular interaction, consultation and coordination, as appropriate between the Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council on matters of mutual interest."

The resolution underlined the importance of a coordinated international response to causes of conflict and recognized the need for developing effective long-term strategies.

It also singled out "securing predictable, sustainable and flexible resources" as a major constraint facing the AU in carrying out the mandate of maintaining regional peace and security.

The resolution called on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to maintain close consultations with the AU and regional economic communities as well as international partners on peace and security challenges in Africa, especially in conflict prevention and resolution.

The resolution urged Ban to consult with the AU to conduct a comprehensive analysis of lessons from practical cooperation between the UN and AU, particularly with regard to the UN/AU Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in order to improve future coordination.
