Nigerian state says to prosecute policeman for killing protester

14:20, January 11, 2012

LAGOS, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria's Lagos State Attorney General Ade Ipaye has said a policeman who allegedly shot a protester to death during Monday's nationwide protest against the removal of petrol subsidy will be prosecuted.

The policeman allegedly shot the youth to death and injured three others in Ogba area of Lagos on Monday.

Ipaye told reporters in Lagos on Tuesday that the Ministry of Justice was still waiting for the conclusion of police investigations on the incident.

"It is unfortunate. I obviously would not want to go by the story in the media. I am actually waiting to see the report of the investigation," he said.

"I am glad that the Commissioner of Police said they have actually apprehended the alleged culprit and that they were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident," he added.

"As soon as they conclude that investigation, we will be willing to prosecute," he said.

Ipaye said the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) would prompt the police to conclude its investigation on time.
