13:56, January 11, 2012

KADUNA, Nigeria, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- The northern Nigeria's Kaduna State government has imposed a curfew on the state following violent protests on Monday and Tuesday over the removal of subsidy on petrol.

A government statement said the curfew would hold in all parts of the state from 9 p.m. local time Tuesday night until further notice.

The statement said the measure became necessary in order to check the spread of violence to other parts of the state.

It said the violence erupted during the protests against the removal of fuel subsidy in some parts of the metropolis on Monday.

It said the curfew was also necessary to prevent further destruction of public property in the state.

The statement said the security agencies had been directed to take necessary measures to stop any attempt to further destroy property in all parts of the state.

The statement warned that anyone caught trying to make trouble would be dealt with as government will not condone any act of lawlessness.
