Number of camp residents drops 66 pct in Haiti: IOM

09:36, January 11, 2012

GENEVA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Two years after the earthquake that devastated Haiti, the number of camp residents has dropped by 66 percent from its peak, the Geneva-based International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday.

To date, there are over 515,000 individuals remaining in 707 camps across the earthquake affected area, a significant decrease from 1.5 million registered in July 2010, as many have found better housing with the help of the international community.

According to the IOM, within two years, more than 100,000 transitional-shelters have been built, housing some 420,000 individuals, the equivalent of the entire population of the U.S. city of Atlanta.

In addition, more than a million tarpaulins were distributed during the same period.

"Significant steps have been taken on the road to recovery, but structural challenges remain, most notably economic development as the country turns the corner from emergency aid to sustainable recovery," IOM spokesperson Jumbe Omari Jumbe told media.
