COLOMBO, Jan.9 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka is to establish a Resident Diplomatic Mission in Ukraine, the government said in its official website here Monday.

This decision was made following the approval of a proposal made by Minister of External Affairs G.L. Peiris to the Cabinet, and was duly approved at the last meeting.

The government of Ukraine, on a reciprocal basis, will establish a Resident Mission in Colombo.

Direct flights started between the two countries last year as a precursor to stronger bilateral ties, the official government website noted.

Ukraine gained independence in 1991 and following the establishment of diplomatic relations, there has been closer cooperation between Sri Lanka and Ukraine on bilateral and multilateral levels, said the Sri Lankan government.

A number of agreements are currently under negotiation, covering education, defense, science and technology, ports and shipping, air services and trade.

Ukraine has become the latest country to expand its diplomatic relations with Sri Lanka after the end of a brutal three decade war in 2009.
