DAMASCUS, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- The initial death toll in a suicide car bombing attack in al-Midan neighborhood in central Damascus on Friday was estimated at 25, and 46 others were injured, Syria's state-run SANA news agency reported.

Witnesses told Xinhua that the suicide bomber blew himself up near a police station in al-Midan neighborhood, killing a number of civilians and policemen.

Footage of the Syrian state TV showed bodies of the casualties scattering at the explosion site, as well as burning cars on the road.

SANA reported that the explosion was also close to Hassan al- Hakeen Basic Education School.

Preliminary information indicated that the attacker detonated the bomb at a traffic light in al-Midan quarter, according to SANA.

The blast is the second deadly attack in the capital since the eruption of mass protests against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in mid March.

On Dec. 23, two suicide bombings targeting two intelligence centers rocked Damascus, leaving 44 people killed and 166 others injured, a day after the first batch of Arab League (AL) monitors arrived in Damascus to assess whether the country abided by an Arab peace plan to end the crackdown on protesters.

The suicide bombings in Syria drew strong condemnation from the international community which called for an end to all forms of violence in the Arab country.
