Five killed in rescue mission of kidnapped Colombian businessman

BOGOTA, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least five people, including two soldiers, were killed in a shootout between Colombian security forces and an armed group during a rescue mission of a kidnapped businessman, an army report said Thursday.

The shootout took place Wednesday night near the southwestern city of Pasto, when soldiers were patrolling a rural area seeking to rescue Milton Marino Tapia, who had been kidnapped hours earlier, said Ana Chavez, an official of Pasto.

According to the report, two soldiers and three kidnappers were killed in the crossfire. The killed kidnappers, including a woman and two men, belonged to a gang that was active in the area.

The hostage was unharmed in the incident, said the report.
