HOUSTON, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- More than 50 people were injured, four critically, early Thursday morning when a pileup involving dozens of vehicles happened on a Southeast Texas highway, officials said.

At least 50 cars crashed in the chain-reaction collisions that happened around 5:45 a.m. local time on Highway 73, five miles west of Port Arthur, Texas, deputy with the Jefferson County Sherriff's Office Rod Carroll was quoted by local media as saying.

The accident was caused by poor visibility due to a mix of fog and smoke from recent marsh wildfires, said Carroll.

Many of the victims were treated for injuries including broken bones, abrasions and trauma, Carroll said.

Part of the highway was closed after the pileup, and was reopened later Thursday morning. Several helicopters were dispatched to the scene.

At least 20 drivers involved in the accident were given accident "blue forms" that indicate that their cars obtained minor damages, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
