ISLAMABAD, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- A total of 520 people were killed and 1,180 others were injured in recent floods that hit Pakistan's southern Sindh Province since this summer, said an official on Wednesday.

Dr. Zafar Iqbal Qadir. Chairman of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), told local media that 116,529 animals were also killed and nearly 1.6 million houses were damaged in the floods.

NDMA has distributed over 3,651,054 ration packets, 314,294 tents and 55,381 blankets among flood affected people, said Qadir, adding that a total of 434,785 mosquito nets have also been handed over to flood affected people while 10,000 mosquito repellent oil have been provided to save them from dengue fever and other mosquito bite related diseases.

According to the NDMA Chairman, 8,000 water coolers, 130,765 plastic sheets/mats, 34,708 buckets and 5,100 family water filtration units have been distributed among the flood hit people of Sindh.

However, there are still 6,912 people residing in 20 relief camps established at various flood hit areas of Sindh, said the chairman, adding that the top priority of NDMA during the rehabilitation phase would be making schools, hospitals and government buildings fully functional.

Clean drinking water facilities would also be restored there as soon as possible, he said.
