YANGON, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar released 467 prisoners from Yangon's Insein Jail on Tuesday under Monday's amnesty order of the new government, state radio and television reported.

The rest of 600 prisoners in the Yangon region will be freed later, the report said.

The report did not mention the number of prisoners freed in other regions and states in the country.

The amnesty was granted to mark the 64th anniversary of the country's Independence Day falling on Wednesday.

The criminals pardoned by the government got death penalty commuted to life sentence, while those sentenced to over 30 years (excluding life sentence) got reduction to 30 years in prison, jail terms of between 20 and 30 years were cut to 20 years and that below 20 years were reduced by a quarter.

The amnesty was the third granted to the prisoners in the country after the new government assumed office on March 30 last year.

Under two previous amnesty orders, the government had respectively freed 14,758 and 6,359 prisoners in May and October.

The October release covered over 200 prisoners of conscience following the National Human Rights Commission appeal to the president.
