NEW DELHI, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- At least 35 people were killed in Cyclone Thane that hit the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu and central-controlled territory of Puducherry since Friday, officials said on Saturday.
The cyclone made its landfall between Puducherry and Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu, bringing with it strong winds blowing at a speed of 140 km/ph and heavy rains all along the coastal regions.
Cuddalore bore the brunt of the cyclone, accounting for 21 deaths, while Puducherry recorded seven deaths, and other coastal areas recorded the other deaths, totaling to 35.
Several huts and small houses collapsed like a pack of cards, main arterial roads were damaged and uprooted trees and electric posts were strewn across streets and pavements.
The cyclone also disrupted rail and air operations, with services canceled or rescheduled.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa sanctioned 1.5 billion rupees (30 million U.S. dollars) for immediate relief measures in the affected areas and directed four ministers to visit the districts devastated by the cyclone.
