Japan government asks TEPCO to consider temporarily state control

TOKYO, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Japan Industry Minister Yukio Edano Wednesday suggested the president of Tokyo Electric Power Co. to consider handing power to the government to run the company temporarily on solving the financial problems and opposed raising power cost.

Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the tsunami hit Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant, asked the government for 8.9 billion U.S. dollars additional capital aid to cover the great mount of compensation for the families affected by the nuclear disaster.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said last week that it plans to raise its rates for electricity for corporations from April and request government approval to hike household electricity charges in a bid to offset rising fuel costs from thermal power plants.

Edano said that raising the electricity charges will affect public confidence of recovery, TEPCO should "considering every solution including temporarily state control to strengthen the finical base."

The president of TEPCO Toshio Nishizawa said they will make new project according to Edano's request.
