AMMAN, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's Islamists on Monday called on the government to arrest the perpetrators of violence against demonstrators on Friday in the city of Mafraq northeast of the Jordanian capital Amman.

"What happened on Friday is a planned crime and was done in front of the security bodies and it was preceded by threats for the Islamic movement," the Islamic Action Front (IAF), the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, said in a statement on Monday.

The IAF alleged that government supporters on Friday assaulted demonstrators who took to the streets demanding uprooting corruption, in addition to burning the offices of the Muslim Brotherhood in Mafraq, some kilometers northeast of Amman.

Many were injured in the clashes in Mafraq, according to the police, which used tear gas to disperse the crowds.

"The assailants wanted to harm national unity and sow seeds of sedition between us (the Islamists) and the tribal leaders in Mafraq," said the statement.

Last Thursday, representatives of Bani Hasan tribe, one of the largest tribes in Jordan, warned the Islamists against holding the demonstration on Friday in Mafraq, where majority of the residents belong to this tribe.
