LONDON, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- The 90-year-old Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II, was taken to hospital in Cambridge for "precautionary tests" after suffering chest pains on Friday, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said.

Prince Philip was flown to the Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire from Sandringham House in Norfolk, where the royal family is gathering to celebrate Christmas.

It was not immediately clear how serious the Duke's condition was. But a spokesman of the hospital said he would be kept in hospital for a few days for tests and observation.

The Duke had just completed a 11-day official tour to Australia with the 85-year-old Queen. He has been in good health considering the age, but was reportedly to have experienced chest pains before.

The last time Prince Philip was in hospital was in April 2008, when he spent three days in London with a chest infection.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have planned to travel across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to mark The Queen's Diamond Jubilee next year.
