DR Congo's opposition leader inaugurates himself president

13:47, December 24, 2011

KINSHASA, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Democratic Republic of Congo's opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi on Friday held a private ceremony at his home to inaugurate himself president of the African nation, his supporters said.

The "swearing in" ceremony was held just three days after President Joseph Kabila was sworn in for a second term.

Tshisekedi, who came in second in the Nov. 28 election, has rejected Kabila's re-election.

Tshisekedi had planned to hold the ceremony at the Kinshasa's Martyrs' Stadium in the capital, but police prevented him and his supporters from gathering there. As a result, a small group of his supporters gathered at his home instead to hold the ceremony.

According to the results officially announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, Kabila has won 49 percent and Tshisekedi 32 percent of the vote. But Tshisekedi declared himself the winner of the election.

Small scale violence was observed during and after the election in different cities. Unrest was feared to renew following Tshisekedi's move on Friday.
