Most Finnish people against joining NATO: report

(Xinhua)

HELSINKI, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The supporting rate for NATO membership has dropped to the lowest point ever, Finnish newspaper Helsingin Sanomat reported on Wednesday.

According to the latest survey published by local media, currently 68 percent of Finns are against Finland to join NATO, while the supporting rate is only 16 percent.

Meanwhile, most of the Finnish political parties were not in favor of Finland's NATO membership with the only exception of the Finnish National Coalition Party. However, 54 percent of its supporters still oppose Finland to join NATO.

With the presidential election of Finland due in January of next year, none of the presidential candidates yet declared support for Finland's NATO membership, said the report.

Experts here took note of the peacekeeping operations by NATO in recent years which were ill-received internationally as a reason of the decline of support of NATO membership in the Nordic country.
