Some 120,000 square kilometers of arable land worldwide is degraded each year. If the trend of degradation in Africa continues, the continent may lose two-thirds of its arable land by 2025, Luc Gnacadja, executive secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, recently said at a meeting in the southwestern Algerian town of Tinerkouk.

The meeting marked the start of the U.N. Decade for Deserts and the Fight against Desertification (2010-2020), according to the Xinhua news agency.
