L.A. consulate shooter identified as Chinese American

09:58, December 19, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- The gunman who fired several shots at the Chinese Consulate-General in Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon has been identified as a naturalized U.S. citizen of Chinese descent, authorities told Xinhua.

The shooter is identified as Jeff Baoliang Zhang, 67, originally from Shanghai, China, and it seems that he acted alone, said the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

The man has apparently become a naturalized U.S. citizen and now lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, the LAPD said.

On Thursday afternoon, the gunman fired several rounds of shots at the downtown office building that houses the consulate-general before fleeing in his car.

No one was hurt during the incident.

Nearly three hours after the shooting, the suspect turned himself in to the LAPD's Wilshire Division on West Venice Boulevard.

Police confiscated his weapon, a 9 mm handgun, and booked him for attempted murder.

The authorities have set his bail at 100,000 U.S. dollars, and he was being held at the LAPD's downtown Metropolitan Detention Center.

Police also called upon anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
