JERUSALEM, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Mac computer-maker Apple plans to open its first overseas research and development center in Israel, one that will focus on flash memory semiconductors, local media reported Thursday.

Ed Frank, Apple's R&D chief, is currently in the country and may be eying Israeli startups that focus on developing flash memory technology, the Electronista electronics industry website reported.

On Wednesday, Apple reported that it was set to buy an Israel- based flash memory production firm, Anobit, which supplies components for the MacBook Air laptop, the iPhone, and the iPad, according to the local Globes business news site.

The deal for Anobit is expected to run between 450 and 500 million U.S. dollars, according to Globes.

The center is to be headed by veteran chipmaker insider Aharon Aharon, who will spend several months at the companies' headquarters in Cupertino, California of the United States before commencing the local operation, Globes said.
