TOKYO, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- It will take about 40 years to scrap the damaged reactors at the troubled Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant, Japan's government and the operator of the facility said Thursday.

The timetable, which was worked out by the government and the Tokyo Electric Power Company, includes a plan to remove used fuel rods from spent fuel pools at four reactor buildings within two years and a schedule to remove the melted fuel inside the reactors and dismantle the reactor buildings, according to local media reports.

The work is set to involve high levels of radiation and the use of remote-controlled robots.

The Japanese government is scheduled to announce on Friday that a stable state of "cold shutdown" has been achieved at the plant.
