Romania, U.S. to intensify cooperation in fighting terrorism, cybercrime

10:50, December 08, 2011

BUCHAREST, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) of the United States is satisfied with the cooperation with the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) in the fight against terrorism and cybercrime, said the visiting FBI director Robert Mueller on Wednesday.

The two security institutions will undertake more actions such as that in July 2011 when more than 100 Romanians were arrested for cyber attacks in Romania and the U.S., which brought prejudices of more than 100 million dollars to American citizens, Mueller told a joint conference held together with SRI director George Maior.

In his turn, the SRI head Maior mentioned that the two institutions identified new sectors of cooperation development, mainly the fight against cyber crime.

"We have identified new sectors in which we should develop the dialogue and cooperation, mainly on the cyber intelligence component," said Maior, adding that they should intensify cooperation also "in the combat of economic and financial crime, a phenomenon exacerbated by the global economic crisis."

Maior and Mueller have met in 2006 when Mueller visited Romania and the two discussed bilateral cooperation in combating corruption, reducing cyber-crime and fighting against organized crime and terrorism.
