Obama scraps vacation to fight payroll tax battle

WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama is scrapping his traditional winter vacation in Hawaii to stay in town for the battle on payroll tax holiday extension, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said Wednesday.

Obama held a White House meeting with the Senate Democratic Leadership in the morning, and afterwards, Reid said Obama told the leaders that first lady Michelle and their two daughters will go to Hawaii later this month, while he'll remain in town until Congress finishes its work on extending the payroll tax cut, which expires at the end of the month.

Obama was scheduled to fly to Hawaii with his family for a holiday on Dec. 17, and stay there through the New Year. But as Republicans refuse to budge on extending the payroll tax holiday, he is facing mounting pressure to scrap the much ridiculed long vacation.

As he scraps his own holiday plans, Obama warned the Republicans not to leave town before the work on payroll tax is done. He said it would be "unacceptable" if House Speaker John Boehner adjourned the lower chamber for Christmas next week without extending the popular tax cut.
