Indian PM assures telecom companies to address their grievance

15:20, December 07, 2011

NEW DELHI, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Wednesday assured the telecom companies that the government would address their grievances and formulate forward-looking policies to sustain growth in the sector.

"I am aware of some concerns of the telecom industry regarding government policy in the telecom sector. I wish to reassure the industry of the government's full commitment to sustainable growth, creativity and enterprise in this vitally important sector of our economy," he said after inaugurating the India Telecom Summit in the national capital.

Top Indian telecom companies have sought the Prime Minister's intervention to sort out differences between them and the Telecom Ministry over disputes regarding one-time spectrum charges, 3G roaming and a uniform license fee.

The prime minister also said that India's telecom sector is one of the fastest growing in the world and urged the industry to look ahead in giving a new sense of momentum to the sector.

"Keeping in view strategic and security interests, there is an urgent need to give impetus to domestic research and development and manufacturing in the telecom sector," he added.
