UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Brazil on Tuesday called on an integrated approach by the international community in addressing ocean and maritime issues, particularly in relation with sustainable development and combating threats to safety.

The statement came as Maria Teresa Mesquita Pessoa, Brazil's minister plenipotentiary in its permanent mission to the UN, introduced the approach in a draft resolution to the General Assembly in a plenary meeting on oceans and the law of the sea.

"This comprehensive resolution is a reflection of the close interrelation of the problems of the ocean space and need to be considered as a whole," Pessoa said.

Pessoa said the resolution contains new provisions that address critical issues, particularly in the run-up to the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

Rio+20 serves as a "unique opportunity" to consider implementing internationally agreed goals related to the sustainable use of the marine environment, she said.
