MEXICO CITY, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Mexican army seized 3,998 kilos of marijuana in operations against drug trafficking in the northern state of Tamaulipas, the Defense Ministry announced Monday.

During the "Northeast Operation" carried out from Thursday to Sunday, the army also seized 1,060 doses of cocaine, 24 guns, 28, 000 cartridges, three buildings and four vehicles, and arrested six people, the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said that the nearly four tons of marijuana seized could be produced in nearly two million doses with a value of 200 billion pesos (14.7 billion U.S. dollars).

Nearly 50,000 people have been killed in drug-related violence in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon launched the "war against organized crime" in 2006.
