UN Security Council imposes further sanctions on Eritrea

15:05, December 06, 2011

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Monday adopted a resolution to condemn Eritrea's alleged provision of support to armed opposition groups in the Horn of Africa region, including Al-Shabaab, and impose further sanctions on Eritrea.

The resolution said the council determines that Eritrea's alleged failure to comply with past council resolutions and Eritrea's "actions undermining peace and reconciliation in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region as well as the dispute between Djibouti and Eritrea constitute a threat to international peace and security."

The resolution was adopted with 13 voting in favor, zero against and abstentions from China and Russia, the two permanent members of the 15-nation Security Council.

Claims that Eritrea had been violating council sanctions by providing political, financial, and logistical support to destabilizing armed groups in the region derive from the findings of the Security Council's Somalia and Eritrea Monitoring Group released in a July 18 report.

The report said that Eritrea has violated arms embargoes, asset freezes, and travel bans that were leveled at those who assist Somali armed groups. Under Security Council Resolution 2023, these sanctions will be expanded to cover more Eritrean individuals and groups.

Eritrea has denied accusations of wrongdoing by the monitoring group.

In the resolution, the council also criticized the use of funds from the so-called diaspora tax in effect in Eritrea in order to " destabilize the Horn of Africa region or violate relevant resolutions."
