19:31, December 05, 2011

ANKARA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A 5.1-magnitude earthquake jolted the Aegean Sea Monday morning, the Istanbul-based Kandilli seismology center said.

The earthquake occurred at 10:17 local time (0817 GMT), with its epicenter about 6 km deep under the Aegean Sea, according to the seismology center affiliated to the Bogazici University.

The tremor was felt by residents in Turkey's western coastal city of Izmir.

No casualty was reported yet.

Turkey, lying atop the North Anatolian fault, has been frequently hit by earthquakes. A 7.2-magnitude quake in October and a 5.6-magnitude quake in November flattened some 2,000 buildings, killed 644 people and left thousands homeless in Turkey 's eastern province of Van.
