Russians parliamentary elections conclude

10:44, December 05, 2011

MOSCOW, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Voters across Russia cast their ballots in the country's sixth parliamentary elections on Sunday, with seven political parties vying for slots in the 450-seat State Duma, the lower parliamentary chamber.

In the vast country split by nine time zones, as voters in the western regions including the capital Moscow began to cast their ballots at 4:00 GMT Sunday, polling was already in full swing in Siberian and Far East regions of Kamchatka, Chukotka, Magadan and Sakhalin, where voting started at 8 a.m. local time on Sunday (20: 00 GMT Saturday).

Voters in Kaliningrad, the westernmost exclave of Russia located between Poland and Lithuania, were the last to conclude the voting in the country at 2100 Moscow time (1700 GMT) Sunday.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced validity of the election, saying there was no reports of serious violation.

According to the preliminary overall turnout announced by the CEC, over 50 percent of the country's 110 million eligible voters cast their ballots in some 94,000 domestic polling stations and about 370 overseas stations in more than 140 foreign countries.

Local media reported the final turnout might be lower than that of the last Duma election in 2007 when the turnout exceeded 60 percent.
