Yemeni ruling party accepts proposed list of opposition-led cabinet: official

15:11, December 02, 2011

SANAA, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Yemeni ruling party accepted the list of the opposition-led transitional government proposed by Prime Minister Mohamed Basindwa, an opposition official said Thursday.

"The ruling General People's Congress party (GPC) agreed and chose one of the two lists of the ministerial positions that were proposed by Basindwa on Wednesday," the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Each of the list contains 17 ministerial portfolios. The official said that "the ruling party chose the list (A) which includes ministries of defense, foreign and oil, etc., and left the list (B) for the opposition coalition which includes the ministries of interior, finance, information and international cooperation."

However, a spokesperson of the ruling party declined to comment on the report.

Basindwa, chief of the opposition National Council, was assigned Sunday by Vice President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to form an interim government in line with a power-transfer deal initiated by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

The new national interim government will be formed with the equal participation of the opposition coalition and the ruling party in accordance with the GCC deal which was signed last week by Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Basindwa is due to announce his new cabinet as soon as Hadi officially declares the ruling party's acceptance of the line-up of the interim government.

As the implementation of the power-transfer deal is moving forward, violence between forces of the rival parties escalated Thursday in the southern restive province of Taiz, leaving at least six people dead and up to 26 others injured, medics and witnesses said.
