MAPUTO, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Mozambican President Armando Guebuza on Thursday said HIV infections tend to reduce in the southern African country, thanks to efforts by the government in the fight against the pandemic.

Up to 500 infections were reported in 2005, compared with 350 cases reported this year, showing the headway in curbing the disease in Mozambique. The government hopes to reduce the cases drastically in the coming years, the state AIM news agency reported on Thursday.

The president hailed the government interventions such as the wide provision of antiretroviral treatment for most of the HIV/ AIDS patients.

"More than 250,000 HIV patients access antiretroviral treatment, this represents a significant increase if compared with only 7,000 HIV patients in 2004 who accessed antiretroviral treatment," the president said.

In addition, 70, 000 pregnant women are receiving treatment to avoid transmitting HIV/AIDS from mother to child. Counselling and testing can now be done in the communities as part of service expansions to the regions where most of Mozambicans live, according to AIM.

The president also appealed to the young generation to adopt better behaviors in order to avoid being caught by the disease. He said they must assume a responsible behavior and think about their future and that of the country.

"The youth is today much more informed about this disease they know how it its transmitted better than any other generation. We must all continue committed and engaged in actions to prevent the disease among teenagers, the youth and all Mozambicans," the president said.
