LONDON, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are to become special ambassadors for the 2012 London Olympics to promote Britain's athletic talent, St James's Palace announced on Thursday.

Prince William said they were "honoured" to get the role. "Catherine, Harry and I are honoured to be Ambassadors for Team GB and Paralympics GB," he said.

"We are hugely looking forward to this incredible sporting competition, but are also looking beyond next summer's games to the springboard it will provide for future success and excellence," he said.

They will join a group of 27 of Britain's most inspirational and accomplished Olympians who were unveiled earlier this year as 2012 ambassadors by the British Olympic Association (BOA), St James's Palace said.

The royals will use their roles to encourage the public to rally behind the British Olympic and Paralympic teams, and to promote participation in sports, the Palace said.

The trio will visit the teams over the coming months before the Olympics begin next July and the Paralympics a month later, and also have some involvement in the global competitions.
