PARIS, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Wednesday strongly condemned the "scandalous"attack on the British embassy in Tehran by protesters, said Valerie Pecresse, the French government spokeswoman.

During a cabinet session held earlier Wednesday, "the president firmly condemned the scandalous attack on the embassy of Great Britain", said Pecresse, who is also the minister of budget.

She said, the attack "confirms" Sarkozy's decision to impose new sanctions against Iran, including freezing the assets of the Bank of Iran and the embargo on Iranian oil exports.

On the same day, the charge d'affaire of the Iranian embassy in Paris was summoned by French Foreign ministry. The latter strongly condemned the attack and the rampage on the British diplomatic compounds in Tehran, said Bernard Valero, the spokesman of the French Foreign Affairs Ministry at a routine press conference.

Earlier reports said a group of Iranian protesters on Tuesday entered the British embassy buildings in Tehran and stormed it, tearing down the British flag and looted Queen Elizabeth II portrait.
