LONDON, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of public sector workers demonstrated in London on Wednesday amid a 24-hour nationwide strike over government's pension reform plan.

The demonstrators marched in central London, holding placards reading "No cuts," "Save our pensions," "Strike on to win," to protest against the plan which is alleged to force them to work longer and pay more contributions to their pensions.

The strike of over 2 million public sector workers on Wednesday has forced most of the schools in Britain to close and no-urgent operations to be cancelled. But the affect on the airports is not as serious as expected.

Figures from Education Department suggest that more than 58 percent of England's 21,700 state schools were closed, with another 13 percent partly shut.

"Even though some schools will not be closed at the day, there will be no classes," a teacher who asked not to be named told Xinhua. "The school will only take care of the students who appear."
