Indonesia to build nuclear power plant as demands continue to rise

07:57, December 01, 2011

JAKARTA, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- With increasing number of population and efforts to provide sufficient power supply to run its growing industry sector, Indonesia needs to have efficient power plant to cope with growing energy needs at home.

Nuclear power plant is the most possible option to fulfill those needs due to its reliable and low-cost operation character, a senior Indonesian government official said. Despite the opposition from activists at home, he added that building a nuclear power plant in Indonesia is inevitable.

"Whether we like it or not, nuclear power has to be added to the country's energy mix because it is cheap and reliable," State-owned Enterprises Minister, Dahlan Iskan, said recently.

Responding to the fear of activists upon the radiation danger from the operation of a nuclear power plant, Dahlan said that if Indonesia goes ahead building a nuclear power plant, it would be equipped with safer technology.

The minister, who is a former director of the country's power utility PLN, said that during his service in the PLN, he was offered a nuclear power plant technology that is safer than the one applied in the tsunami-stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan.

"The nuclear power plant technology offered to me was so advanced. It wouldn't be affected even if it were hit by a plane," Dahlan said on Monday. The Fukushima nuclear power plant uses 10 years old nuclear technology, he added.
