BEIRUT, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese army found two rocket launch pads in southern Lebanon on Tuesday evening, hours after rockets were fired into northern Israel, a security source told Xinhua.

Al-Qaeda affiliated militant group Abdullah Azzam Brigades claimed responsibility for the attack, according to Elnashra news website. The group carried out similar rocket attacks from southern Lebanon in the last years.

The security source said a battery and a timer were also left behind in a deserted area between the southern border villages of Rmeish and Ain Ibl.

While Israel's army said several rockets landed in the western Galilee region, causing no casualties, the source from the Lebanese Army told Lebanese media that only one rocket was fired from a remote area near the border with Israel.

Israel retaliated 50 minutes after the initial attack, firing six artillery shells into the same remote area where the rockets were launched, the security source said.

"On Tuesday morning, a unit from Abdallah Azzam Brigades shelled Zionist settlements in Northern Palestine from southern Lebanon and the missiles hit their targets," the Elnashra website quoted the Abdullah Azzam's statement as saying.

Lebanese President Michel Sleiman on Tuesday afternoon said the rocket attack against Israel was a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which put an end to the 2006 summer war with Israel.

He added that the firing of rocket was an individual act that did not serve the interest of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

A joint Lebanese Army-UNIFIL committee was also set up to look into the incident.
